A competitor to the VON case definition of NEC
N. T. Longford and C. Battersby
Abstract
The Vermont Oxford Network (VON) has established a rule for predicting
necrotising enterocolitis by reaching a consensus among a group of experts
in neonatology.
We develop an alternative rule by analysing a dataset extracted
from the UK National Neonatal Research Database for two recent years.
The new rule, based on a five-point scale, is more precise than the VON rule,
but is also more complex. Unlike the VON rule, it can be tailored
to the clinicians' purpose, priorities and value judgements,
and can incorporate a grey zone.}
